Arroyo to undergo surgery

Former president and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will have to undergo an operation within the week due to her damaged cervical spine with multi-level cervical spondylosis.

Her attending physician, Dr. Juliet Cervantes, said an operation must be done immediately to prevent a likely paralysis.

“This can lead to paralysis. Tests are being conducted for her surgery,” Cervantes said as she issued the latest medical bulletin at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.

Cervantes noted the risks of conducting the medical operation.

“The surgery will decompress the nerves and align the cervical bones. The surgery is risky since it involves the spinal cord and nerves that enable hand movement and breathing,” Cervantes told a press conference.

She said Arroyo is conscious but has been told to rest. The former president will also undergo work-up in preparation for her surgery.

Cervantes acknowledged that recent news developments have aggravated Arroyo’s condition.

“All the stresses that are happening contributed to her condition,” said Cervantes.
