The Philippine Coast Guard on Tuesday confirmed eight bodies of fishermen earlier reported missing off Masbate was recovered.
The Coast Guard was searching for survivors of the FB Hope Cristie, which sank last July 26 while Tropical Storm “Juaning" battered Luzon. Eleven crewmembers remain unaccounted for.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the death toll from “Juaning" climbed to 66 with the confirmed deaths of the eight Hope Cristie crew and one drowning victim in Boac, Marinduque.
NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said the eight bodies of the Hope Cristie crewmember were in advance states of decomposition and were promptly brought to Roxas City for “further verification and disposition."
The Coast Guard deployed the BRP Edsa, BRP Corregidor and TB Habagat in the search and rescue operations for the missing fishermen, Also dispatched were a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft.
Initial investigation of the Coast Guard revealed that FB Hope Christie was denied clearance to depart from the Libas Fish Port in Roxas City because it had expired safety documents, but the boat, owned and operated by Raul Uy of Roxas City, was still able to depart.
The FB Hope Cristie was between Mandaon, Masbate and Sibuyan Island, Romblon when it met big waves and strong winds, causing it to break apart and sink on July 26.
The next day the Coast Guard Detachment in Calumpang, Masbate said local fishermen found 13 members of the boat’s crew.
Rescued were Jun-Jun Flora, Vicente Dela Cruz, Andy Layon, Jonex Atagani, Juvy Balite, Noel Romano, Rex Bocala, Joseph Colipapap, Andro Bellocillo, Rodolfo Oliva, Michael Aprevo, Dante Danio and Arnel Aceboque. — ELR/VS, GMA News
