Akbayan wants life sentence vs Arroyo

Amid resurrected accusations of poll fraud and corruption, former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is set to face another legal battle.

Akbayan Party-list on Monday announced it will file plunder charges before the Ombudsman, following the recent 'revelations' of the malversation of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office intelligence fund by the previous administration.
“Maputol na sa wakas ang impunity ni dating pangulong GMA at gawin siyang accountable sa kaniyang mga krimen (We hope to finally put an end to former president GMA’s impunity and make her accountable for all her crimes),” said former Akbayan representative Risa Hontiveros in a press conference.

The party said that they are seeking life sentence conviction for the former president.

“We are talking about nine years of plunder and fraud,” said Akbayan representative Kaka Bag-ao.

Akbayan Representatives Walden Bello added that they are urging Arroyo to take a leave of absence from Congress while investigations are taking place.

“Her presence will be a distraction in the House in performing our business,” Bello said.

Bag-ao added that Arroyo should take a leave of absence from Congress so that she could focus in responding to the charges that are being filed against her.

“Ito na sana ang huling SONAng dadaluhan ni GMA. Sa darating na SONA, siya ay nagseserve na ng kaniyang karampatang sentence sa bilangguan (This may be the last time GMA will attend the SONA. In the next SONA, she is already serving her sentence in jail),” Hontiveros said.
